Uganda's Two Great Primate Encounters in Five Days
Five days is all it takes to witness the two most profound wildlife encounters Uganda has to offer. This focused itinerary — one of the most popular on our safari collection — threads together Kibale Forest's chimpanzee-rich jungles and the incomparable mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with Queen Elizabeth's wildlife-packed savannahs and the world-famous Ishasha tree-climbing lions bridging the journey in between.
Every detail is arranged in your private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a professional English-speaking guide — park permits, accommodation, game drives, boat safaris, and all transfers. Guests arriving or departing via Rwanda can connect seamlessly through our partner service Kigali Transfers to Bwindi, with airport transfers available on both ends.
Two primates. Three parks. Five unforgettable days in the heart of East Africa's greatest wilderness.

Your Detailed Itinerary
Drive West to the Primate Capital of the World
Your driver-guide collects you early from your Kampala or Entebbe hotel for the westward drive to Kibale Forest National Park — the finest chimpanzee destination on Earth. The journey of approximately 5–6 hours carries you through the fertile heartland of Uganda, past Kampala's vibrant outskirts, across the equator (which you'll cross twice on this tour), and up into the cool tea-covered highlands surrounding Fort Portal.
Fort Portal itself is one of Uganda's most charming towns — a highland retreat framed by the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, known as the legendary "Mountains of the Moon." The approach to Kibale through the volcanic crater lake district is one of the most beautiful drives in East Africa, with perfectly circular lakes shimmering vivid blues and greens in the valley below. Arrive in the afternoon, check in to your forest lodge, and settle into the primal sounds of one of Africa's most biodiverse ecosystems. Your guide delivers a full chimpanzee trekking briefing after dinner. Browse our full safari collection for other itinerary options.
Chimpanzee Trekking & Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary
Rise before dawn for the most exhilarating wildlife encounter of the Ugandan jungle: chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest. Armed with ranger escorts and expert trackers, you enter the forest on the trail of one of the park's habituated chimpanzee groups — communities whose movements are monitored daily, giving you the highest possible chance of a prolonged, close encounter. The trek lasts between 2 and 5 hours, winding through dense tropical canopy where 13 primate species share the same forest.
When the trackers signal and you find the group — perhaps swinging noisily overhead, feeding on forest fruit, or descending to the ground in a fluid, purposeful procession — the moment is electric. One hour spent in the presence of chimpanzees, watching them groom each other, play, call, and problem-solve, is a profound experience that reshapes how you think about intelligence, family, and our own evolutionary story. Kibale holds over 1,500 chimpanzees — the largest protected population anywhere on Earth.
After a lodge lunch, visit the community-managed Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a late afternoon walk through papyrus swamp and riverine forest — home to sitatunga antelope, red-tailed monkeys, l'Hoest's monkeys, and extraordinary birdlife including the Great Blue Turaco and African Pitta. The walk is managed by the local community and is one of the finest conservation tourism experiences in East Africa. Learn more about our safari vehicles.
Kazinga Channel Cruise & Ishasha Tree-Climbing Lions
After breakfast, depart Kibale and drive south through the volcanic crater lake district to Queen Elizabeth National Park — Uganda's most biologically diverse protected area, encompassing savannah, tropical forest, wetland, and crater lake habitats within a single extraordinary landscape. The drive takes approximately 2 hours and the scenery becomes more dramatic with every kilometre.
Arrive in time for the Kazinga Channel boat cruise — a 2-hour journey along the natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. The Kazinga Channel banks are home to the largest hippopotamus concentration in Africa, with hundreds of hippos wallowing at close range alongside your boat. Enormous Nile crocodiles bask on every exposed sandbank, while buffalo herds wade in to drink and elephant families move along the water's edge. With over 600 bird species documented in the park, your guide will be constantly pointing out remarkable sightings along the shoreline.
After the cruise, drive directly southward to the remote Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth — one of the only places on Earth where lions habitually rest in the high canopy of ancient fig trees. This extraordinary behaviour is unique to the Ishasha pride, and overnight in this quieter corner of the park maximises your chances of the iconic sighting at first light. Settle in as the African night descends over the distant Virunga Volcanoes.
Lion Search at Dawn & Transfer to Gorilla Country
The morning begins with a focused dawn drive through the Ishasha sector in dedicated pursuit of the tree-climbing lions. Your guide knows the fig trees where the resident prides prefer to rest, and the golden early-morning light creates the most dramatic photography conditions of the entire tour — a lion draped languidly across a high branch with the Congolese escarpment behind it is one of Africa's most iconic wildlife images. Leopards, hyenas, Ugandan kob, and topi are also regularly spotted in this quieter, more remote corner of the park.
After a satisfying Ishasha morning, depart for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — home to nearly half the world's remaining 1,100 mountain gorillas. The 3-hour drive traverses some of Uganda's most dramatic highland scenery, climbing through terraced hillsides and small farming communities before the forest closes in around you and the Virunga Volcanoes rise on the southern horizon.
Check in to your forest lodge — many perched on the ridge with sweeping views across the ancient canopy to the volcanoes beyond — and enjoy a tranquil afternoon as your guide delivers a thorough gorilla trekking briefing: the gorilla family you will visit, the forest terrain, photography protocols, conservation rules, and what to expect from the encounter ahead. This is the eve of the most profound moment of the safari. Learn more about the gorilla trekking experience from our partners.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Return Home
The moment this entire safari has been building towards. After an early breakfast, collect your gorilla trekking permit at the park headquarters and enter the Impenetrable Forest with armed rangers and specialist trackers. The trek through dense undergrowth, bamboo thicket, root-tangled slopes, and ancient forest can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours — every single minute of effort completely and permanently rewarded.
When the trackers give the signal and you push through the last screen of vegetation to find a silverback mountain gorilla resting calmly mere metres away — his vast frame, unhurried stillness, and deeply intelligent gaze utterly overwhelming — the world narrows to this single, extraordinary moment. One precious hour with the family: watching infants tumble and play, mothers nurse their young, juveniles chase each other through the canopy, and the silverback hold quiet, absolute authority over his group. This is the rarest and most moving encounter wildlife travel can offer. Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain on Earth.
After the trek, celebrate over a long lodge lunch and savour the experience before beginning the return drive to Kampala — or northward toward Kigali via the Cyanika border crossing with full assistance from our team. Kigali Transfers to Bwindi can assist with all onward Rwanda connections. Contact us now — gorilla permits are strictly limited and sell out months in advance.
