Kigali Departure & Drive to Gorilla Country
Your driver-guide collects you from your Kigali hotel in the early morning for the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The total drive of approximately 4–5 hours takes you westward from Kigali through Rwanda's famously terraced hillside landscape — the "Land of a Thousand Hills" at its most breathtaking — before reaching the Cyanika border crossing into Uganda.

On the Ugandan side, the landscape shifts dramatically as you climb into the Kigezi Highlands — often called the "Switzerland of Africa" for its rolling green hills, mist-draped valleys, and crisp mountain air. Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Return Journey
Rise early for a simple breakfast before collecting your gorilla trekking permit at the park headquarters and meeting your Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger escort. The morning briefing at the trailhead confirms the day's gorilla family allocation and the last known location reported by tracker teams — who enter the forest at first light each day to locate the family before visitors begin their trek.
Then the forest absorbs you. The trail descends and climbs through dense undergrowth, bamboo thickets, and cathedral-canopy sections where ancient trees filter the highland light. The trek can last anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours depending on how far the gorilla family has moved overnight — the variance is part of the authenticity. There are no guarantees in wild gorilla trekking; there is only the certainty that trackers will find them, and that the effort will be utterly rewarded.
When the trackers signal — a quiet hand gesture, a change in pace — and you push through the last screen of undergrowth into the clearing where the family rests, everything narrows. A silverback mountain gorilla, weighing perhaps 200 kilograms, sits metres from you with an unhurried composure that feels ancient and entirely indifferent to the boundary between wilderness and civilisation. Infants tumble and chase each other. A mother nurses with calm detachment. The silverback moves, and the ground trembles slightly.
