Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain alive on Earth. Half of them live in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — an ancient, mist-cloaked rainforest where habituated gorilla families can be visited each morning under the care of Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and expert trackers. This 2-day safari is designed for travellers based in or transiting through Kigali who want to experience this encounter without a lengthy multi-day safari — delivered with the same quality, private vehicles, and professional guiding that defines every Pick and Transfer itinerary.
You depart Kigali on Day 1, cross into Uganda at the Cyanika border, and arrive at your forest lodge in Bwindi in time for an evening briefing and a full night's rest in the highlands before your early morning trek. Day 2 brings the encounter itself — and depending on your onward plans, a return to Kigali the same afternoon, or a connection to a longer Uganda safari through our team. The Kigali Transfers to Bwindi specialist service handles all cross-border logistics seamlessly.
No experience is required for the trek. Expert trackers pre-locate the gorilla family each morning — your role is simply to walk, watch, and be present for one extraordinary hour.
About the Gorilla Permit: Each gorilla trekking permit costs USD $800 per person, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Only 8 visitors are permitted to spend time with each habituated gorilla family per day, protecting both the gorillas and the integrity of the experience. Permits must be secured well in advance — our team manages the full booking process on your behalf.

Your Detailed Itinerary
Kigali Departure & Drive to Gorilla Country
Your driver-guide collects you from your Kigali hotel in the early morning for the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The total drive of approximately 4–5 hours takes you westward from Kigali through Rwanda's famously terraced hillside landscape — the "Land of a Thousand Hills" at its most breathtaking — before reaching the Cyanika border crossing into Uganda.
Our team handles all cross-border paperwork and Uganda entry formalities. On the Ugandan side, the landscape shifts dramatically as you climb into the Kigezi Highlands — often called the "Switzerland of Africa" for its rolling green hills, mist-draped valleys, and crisp mountain air. As you near Bwindi, the ancient forest canopy appears on the horizon: one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse ecosystems.
Arrive at your forest lodge in the early-to-mid afternoon. Take time to settle in, walk the lodge grounds, and absorb the extraordinary sounds of the rainforest — hornbills calling, primates moving through the canopy, and the distant rushing of highland streams. After dinner, your professional guide delivers a comprehensive gorilla trekking briefing: covering the habituated gorilla family you will visit, forest terrain and trail conditions, what to expect during the encounter, conservation protocols (no flash photography, maintain the 7-metre respectful distance, cough into your sleeve), and how to read gorilla body language. This briefing transforms tomorrow's experience from a walk in the woods into something you will understand and remember fully.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Return Journey
Rise early for a simple breakfast before collecting your gorilla trekking permit at the park headquarters and meeting your Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger escort. The morning briefing at the trailhead confirms the day's gorilla family allocation and the last known location reported by tracker teams — who enter the forest at first light each day to locate the family before visitors begin their trek.
Then the forest absorbs you. The trail descends and climbs through dense undergrowth, bamboo thickets, and cathedral-canopy sections where ancient trees filter the highland light. The trek can last anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours depending on how far the gorilla family has moved overnight — the variance is part of the authenticity. There are no guarantees in wild gorilla trekking; there is only the certainty that trackers will find them, and that the effort will be utterly rewarded.
When the trackers signal — a quiet hand gesture, a change in pace — and you push through the last screen of undergrowth into the clearing where the family rests, everything narrows. A silverback mountain gorilla, weighing perhaps 200 kilograms, sits metres from you with an unhurried composure that feels ancient and entirely indifferent to the boundary between wilderness and civilisation. Infants tumble and chase each other. A mother nurses with calm detachment. The silverback moves, and the ground trembles slightly. One full hour — regulated by UWA to protect the gorillas' health and behaviour — passes in what feels like both forever and nothing at all.
After the trek, return to the lodge for a celebratory lunch and to relive the experience with your guide. In the early afternoon, begin the return journey across the Cyanika border and back through the Rwandan highlands to Kigali, arriving in the early evening. Those continuing to a longer Uganda safari can be transferred directly — our team coordinates every connection. Contact us to discuss onward options or the full 7-day Uganda safari.
Why Start from Kigali?
Rwanda's capital is one of Africa's most accessible and best-connected cities — making it the ideal gateway for gorilla trekking in southwest Uganda.
- ✈️ Kigali International Airport connects directly to Europe, the Middle East, and across Africa — ideal for travellers combining gorilla trekking with other East African destinations.
- 🗺️ Bwindi's Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors are geographically closer to Kigali than to Kampala — the road journey is approximately 4–5 hours versus 8–9 hours from Uganda's capital.
- 🛂 The Cyanika border crossing is smooth and well-managed, with our team handling all paperwork and formalities to eliminate any delay or uncertainty.
- 🔗 Kigali is an excellent hub for combining Uganda gorilla trekking with Rwanda's own gorilla safari experiences in Volcanoes National Park — a different gorilla family in a different forest, equally extraordinary.
